There are a lot of options when it comes to Chiropractic care which can make it hard to decide who to choose, or whether to see one at all. Here are some important things to consider when choosing a Chiropractor.
Active Component to Care
It’s important an active component is included (stretches, exercises, etc) regardless of the reason you’re being treated. You will get better faster, decrease the chance of an injury recurrence, and be more in control of your own health by being able to treat yourself at home between visits.
Hands on Treatment
Hands on treatment should be included regardless of the injury. This often includes adjusting, soft tissue (muscles, ligament, etc) therapy such as Active Release Technique, Graston Technique, and other general muscle treatment techniques.
Education
Understanding what’s wrong, why an injury occurred and how to prevent it from happening again is extremely important. This starts with everything being explained clearly and in language you can understand.
Types of Adjusting
There are a lot out there ranging from what most people are familiar with (hearing “popping or cracking” type noise) to gentler techniques with little force or noise. All forms are very safe so it really goes to personal preference. Different types include Diversified, Gonstead, Activator Technique, NUCCA, and Cranio-Sacral.
Additional Options
Some Chiropractors also use acupuncture, orthotics, nutritional recommendations or various therapy machines. Acupuncture has some good supporting evidence and can be very helpful for some people. Orthotics will provide some foot support 100% of the time and can also be helpful. Nutrition is extremely important and can have a huge impact on your health. Various therapy machines like ultrasound, TENS, laser therapy, shockwave therapy, spinal decompression can also be used with some having better supporting evidence for their effectiveness then others.
